FACULTY ADVISORS

Toward the end of the first year of studies, doctoral students are encouraged to select a faculty advisor from the area in which she or he plans to specialize. Such a selection should be done with the approval of the Director of the Academic Area.

The faculty advisor is the primary person responsible for assisting in the professional development of graduate students. Accordingly, once a student is admitted into the program and enters the University, a faculty advisor is assigned to attend to the student's personal and academic development as a scholar. This faculty member will usually be teaching in the area of the student's field of concentration. It is the faculty advisor's responsibility to:

  • Be acquainted with the advisee's academic background, professional experience, and statement of purpose in order to ascertain the student's goals and academic lacunae.
  • Assist the student in the initial and on-going selection of courses.
  • Meet with the student periodically (at least twice per semester, at mid-term and during the pre-registration period is recommended) to evaluate progress and discuss direction.
  • Oversee the formation of the comprehensive boards, in consultation with the student, and monitor the progress of the comprehensive process.
  • Assist the student in the selection of a dissertation director.

It is the student's responsibility to take the initiative in maintaining regular contact with the faculty advisor.
