 Biography

     Joseph M. White, a native and longtime resident of Indianapolis, earned the BA in history at Indiana University, MA at Butler University, and PhD from the University of Notre Dame, with emphasis on the history of U.S. Catholicism. After graduate studies, he was a fellow of Notre Dame’s Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism, 1981-1989, working on the Lilly-funded project on the history of U.S. Catholic theological education (seminaries). Subsequently, as an independent scholar, he produced commissioned histories of Catholic institutions and collaborated in historical projects related to Indianapolis.

     In addition to Catholic seminaries, his areas of historical interest include Catholic ethnic groups, dioceses, parishes, religious orders, religious sites, bishops’ leadership, and anti-Catholic movements. He has served as associate editor of the quarterly journal, U.S. Catholic Historian, since 1986. He has taught part-time at Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis, Marian University (Indianapolis), and St. Meinrad School of Theology.  In recent years, he earned the M.L.S. degree from Indiana University.  He and wife Rebecca and their three young sons reside in Bowie, Maryland.
