Biography
David Lantigua completed his Ph.D. in the area of Moral Theology/Christian Ethics from the University of Notre Dame where he was most recently a graduate fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study. His dissertation, which drew upon research conducted in Spain, examined the Christian legal theory of religious toleration developed by sixteenth-century Spanish Dominicans to defend the freedom of Amerindian peoples, especially in religious matters.
The reception of Thomistic moral theology among Spanish scholastic jurists and its integration with a comprehensive doctrine of rights is Dr. Lantigua’s primary area of research. His scholarly interests also include medieval and modern Catholic social thought with a focus on the topics of church autonomy, the ethics of evangelization, religious freedom and human rights. He has articles forthcoming in the Journal of Moral Theology and Church Life: A Journal for the New Evangelization. He will also be joining historian Lawrence Clayton as co-editor and co-translator for The Essential Bartolomé de las Casas: A Brief History with Documents.
Before attending Notre Dame, Dr. Lantigua obtained a master’s degree in religious studies from the University of South Florida where he taught on the subject of comparative religious ethics. He is co-author with Darrell Fasching and Dell deChant for Comparative Religious Ethics: A Narrative Approach to Global Ethics, 2nd Edition (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011).
Dr. Lantigua has two daughters and is married to Marisa, a Florida native. They live as faculty-in-residence at CUA.
