Biography

A native of New Rochelle, N.Y., William P. Loewe received B.A. (Classics, Philosophy, French) and M.A. (French) degrees from Fordham University and a Ph.L. from Loyola Seminary.. After teaching high school languages he went on to Marquette University, where he received a Ph.D. in systematic theology. A member of the CUA faculty since 1973, he has focused on Christology and soteriology in his teaching.  At various times he has served as department chair, associate dean, and chair of the Academic Senate. Active in the Catholic Theological Society of America and the College Theology Society, he has served as president of the latter.  In addition to numerous book reviews and various book chapters his articles have appeared in the Anglican Theological Review, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Heythrop Journal, Horizons, Living Light, and Theological Studies.  His widely used College Student’s Introduction to Christology has been translated into Portuguese, and he has co-edited two other books. He is currently working on a history of the soteriological tradition using Bernard Lonergan’s notion of the stages of meaning as a critical control. He enjoys biking, both locally and abroad.

In 2011 former students and colleagues honored Dr. Loewe with a Festschrift entitled Finding Salvation in Christ: Essays on Christology and Soteriology in Honor of William P. Loewe, edited by Christopher Denny and Christopher McMahon (Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock).
