The Catholic University of America

 The Johannes Quasten Award

For Excellence in Scholarship and Leadership in Religious Studies

Established in 1985 as the only academic award given by The Catholic University of America’s School of Theology and Religious Studies, the Quasten Medal is named after the Rev. Johannes Quasten, a professor of religious studies who taught at CUA for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1979. Quasten published more than 100 books and articles and is mostly known for his four-volume “Patrology,” a standard reference in the field of ancient church history and historical theology.

Congratulations to Our Newest Award Recipient:

Rev. Joseph Chinnici, O.F.M.

“Junipero Serra: A Hermeneutic of Holiness for the 21st Century” – Quasten Award Presentation

October 14, 2015 – Rev. Joseph Chinnici, O.F.M.

Father Joseph Chinnici, O.F.M., president of the Franciscan School of Theology, Oceanside, Calif., has been president of the American Catholic Historical Association and written numerous works on Church history. His Living Stones, The History and Structure of Catholic Spiritual Life in the United States (1989, 1996) and co-edited volume Prayer and Practice in the American Catholic Community (2000) have served several generations of students in the field.

He served as provincial minister of his Province of Saint Barbara from 1988 to 1997 and it was in that capacity that he dealt with the first wave of sexual abuse of minors in the Church. Father Chinnici chronicled this story along with a Franciscan theological interpretation in When Values Collide, The Catholic Church, Sexual Abuse, and the Challenges of Leadership (2010), a work that won first prizes from both the Catholic Press Association and the Religion Newswriters Association.

Active in the revitalization of the Franciscan intellectual tradition, he has published numerous articles on Franciscan theology, spirituality, and social thought. As a visiting professor for one semester, he held the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Chair of Church History at The Catholic University of America in 1987.
