Theology & Religious Studies Requirements for Degree Programs Requiring 4 TRS Courses

The courses offered by TRS support the General Educational Goals approved by the CUA Undergraduate Board on April 23, 2008. Three of the seven goals address an outcome related to education in Theology & Religious Study in which graduates will:

        1.       Reflect critically on the interrelationships between faith and reason

        2.       Demonstrate knowledge of the Western theological tradition

        3.       Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for different religions.

The course numbering system for TRS courses does not reflect the degree of difficulty or imply a sequence of study but, rather, indicate the focus of the course and the subdiscipline within the fields of in Theology & Religious Studies.

200-level:  Broad introduction to a subdiscipline in Theology & Religious Studies (i.e., Biblical Studies, Church History, Moral Theology/Ethics, Liturgy & Sacraments, Systematic Theology, and Religious Studies)

300-level: A focused study of a specific topic within a subdiscipline (lecture).       

400-level courses are similar to 300-level courses in that they are the focused study of a Special Topic within a subdiscipline but taught in seminar format (12-15 students). Enrollment is controlled to ensure only those students that have an interest in the topic will take part in the seminar.

Students have broad latitude in selecting TRS courses to fulfill the TRS Distribution Requirements and are encouraged to take a variety of courses in different subdisciplines. To help in determining the respective areas (or subdisciplines), with the exception of TRS 201, the second digit in a TRS course number designates the subdiscipline.   For example, any course with a three (3) as the second number is a course in Moral Theology/Ethics and include TRS 230, 33X and 430).
